Band Audition Pieces

GENERAL AUDITION INFORMATION

All applicants are required to audition.  Auditions will be held from 6 – 8PM on Monday, March 16th and Tuesday, March 17th at Magothy/ Severn River Middle School. 

All music applicants are required to audition on either March 16 (last name A-L) or March 17 (last name M-Z). On the day of the audition students will check-in at designated camp tables in the cafeteria at Magothy/ Severn River Middle School. Students will be called back for a ten minute audition which will consist of prepared selections, scales and brief sight-reading examples. The audition score is based on a rubric that includes technique, correct notes, tempo, phrasing, interpretation and tone quality.

Intermediate Band  – Brass and Woodwind

Students should bring their instrument and specified audition music.  The students will be asked to play:

  • A one octave concert B flat Major scale. (scale should be memorized)
  • Camp audition piece for their instrument. The camp audition piece is available below:

Intermediate Bassoon

A short sight-reading example. The students will be given time to look at and prepare the sight-reading before performing.

Intermediate Band – Percussion 

A snare drum, orchestra bells, bell mallets and drum sticks will be provided in the audition room but students have the option of bringing their own instruments and mallets. Students will be asked to play:

  • A one octave F Major scale on bell set. (scale should be memorized)
  • Single paradiddle and a double stroke roll on snare drum.
  • Camp audition piece on snare drum and mallets. The camp audition piece is available below:

  • A short rhythmic sight-reading example. The students will be given time to look at and prepare the sight-reading before performing

Advanced Band – Brass and Woodwind

Students should bring their instruments. The students will be asked to play:

  • A one octave chromatic scale (flute and clarinet will perform two octaves) AND a one octave major scale chosen from the keys of concert E flat, A flat, or F Major (flute and clarinet will perform two octaves). Scales must be memorized.
  • Camp audition piece for their instrument. The camp audition piece is available below:

  • A one octave scale on mallet percussion selected from concert E flat, A flat or F Major. Scales must be memorized.
  • One of the following rudiments to be performed on snare drum:
    • Flam taps
    • Paradiddles
    • 5 stroke roll
    • 9 stroke roll
  • Long roll on the snare drum.

Advanced Bells and Timpani

  • A short melodic and a short rhythmic-sight reading example. The students will be given time to look at and prepare the sight-reading before performing.
