Advanced Audition Pieces

GENERAL AUDITION INFORMATION

All applicants are required to audition.  Auditions will be held from 6 – 8PM on Monday, March 10th and Tuesday, March 11th at Chesapeake Bay Middle School. 

UPDATE: Camp Auditions are cancelled for March 3rd & 4th due to weather, they have been rescheduled to 6 – 8 PM on Monday, March 10th and Tuesday, March 11th at Chesapeake Bay Middle School.

All music applicants are required to audition on either March 10 (last name A-L) or March 11 (last name M-Z). On the day of the audition students will check-in at designated camp tables in the cafeteria at Chesapeake Bay Middle School. Students will be called back for a ten minute audition which will consist of prepared selections, scales and brief sight-reading examples. The audition score is based on a rubric that includes technique, correct notes, tempo, phrasing, interpretation and tone quality.

Advanced String Camp

Students should bring their instrument. The students will be asked to play:

  • A two octave major scale selected from C, G, A ,F, B flat and E flat Major (Double Bass, one octave). Scales must be memorized.
  • Camp audition piece for their instrument. The camp audition piece is available below:

  • A short sight-reading example. The students will be given time to look at and prepare the sight-reading before performing.

Advanced Band Camp

Brass and Woodwind

Students should bring their instruments. The students will be asked to play:

  • A one octave chromatic scale (flute and clarinet will perform two octaves) AND a one octave major scale chosen from the keys of concert E flat, A flat, or F Major (flute and clarinet will perform two octaves). Scales must be memorized.
  • Camp audition piece for their instrument. The camp audition piece is available below:

Percussion

A snare drum, orchestra bells, bell mallets and drum sticks will be provided in the audition room but students have the option of bringing their own instruments and mallets. Students will be asked to play:

  • A one octave scale on mallet percussion selected from concert E flat, A flat or F Major. Scales must be memorized.
  • One of the following rudiments to be performed on snare drum:
    • Flam taps
    • Paradiddles
    • 5 stroke roll
    • 9 stroke roll
  • Long roll on the snare drum.

Advanced Bells and Timpani

    • A short melodic and a short rhythmic-sight reading example. The students will be given time to look at and prepare the sight-reading before performing.

Advanced Chorus Camp

Students will be asked to perform:

  • The camp audition piece “O Music, Sweet Music,” without accompaniment (a capella) and memorized. The audition piece is available below:

Advanced Vocal Audition “O Music, Sweet Music”

  • Pitch matching by echoing simple melodic patterns after hearing them played.
  • A sight-read rhythmic example which includes whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes and quarter rests AND a sight-read melodic example which includes stepwise motion and a skip of a third (do-mi-sol). The students will be given time to look at and prepare the sight-reading before performing.
